Fun at swimming!

This term, we've been having a blast with our swimming lessons! It has been amazing to see that most of the kids are choosing to swim in the big pool instead of the small one. They have been working on their life-saving skills, such as being able to float for an extended period of time.

Some of the kids were a bit daunted by the idea of going in the big pool when we got everyone to have a go at swimming in it this week. But with the floatation belts, there was no chance of them sinking. Huge shout out to Luca who felt the fear and did it anyway! He was so proud of himself for getting in the big pool and the smile on his face was priceless. 💖

A visit by the Canterbury Pride.

On Thursday we were lucky enough to have 3 members of the Canterbury United Pride football team come to school to take a group of year4/5 girls for a skills lesson.

It was a great session with all of the girls keen and eager to learn from these footballing role models. The level of enthusiasm and enjoyment shown by the group was amazing. Well done girls!!

At the end of the session, there was a prizegiving where everyone got a poster and a lucky few were given a mini football. We were also incredibly lucky to be donated a set of goals, a set of Nike footballs and a set of bibs to use for training.

The girls in the group were so inspired they were all very keen to set up a girls football team for next years Winter Sport at Rāwhiti Domain.

A HUGE thank you to Mainland Canterbury Pride for this opportunity, it was a real winner.

Our Art Gallery and Museum Amazing Day

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, our Tāwhirimātea tamariki had the opportunity to have a day exploring the museum, lunching in the Botanical Gardens and participating in a fantastic art programme.

Fun was had by all hanging from the branches on the giant trees in the garden, creating clay glitter models and visiting the children's favourite spots in the museum, especially the Galileo hands-on exhibition.

A big thank you to the whanau that went our adventures with us.

Athletics Day!

What an awesome Athletics Day we had this year! It was so great to see our tamariki giving it their all. We saw success in many of our Tāwhirimātea students winning or placing in the top 5 of their events. And we saw resilience in the students who aren't so keen on sports, but got out there and did it anyway. Everyone should feel so proud of themselves! Karawhiua!

Christchurch Symphony Orchestra

This week the CSO came to our school to teach us about different instruments and how to make music. Urmi's group have been learning how to rap, play the violin, the ukuleles and drums. We are writing music about Space. We are working with the CSO every day for half an hour and on Friday we are going to perform to the whole school. We are feeling a bit nervous but excited too.

Week 10 Athletics Fun

This week in Tāwhrimātea, has been having a great time practising athletics in preparation for the Athletics  Day in Week 2, Term 4.

The tamariki are training in the high jump, long jump, shot put and discus 4 days a week. Their faces beamed as the distances they achieved grew.

The tamariki were set the task to build the strongest bridge. The challenge was on, which bridge would hold the most books? Everyone entered enthusiastically into the challenge. They measured, built and tested their bridges. Their faces said it all!!!!

Kids in Space!

This week in Tāwhrimātea, we were so lucky to have Anne-Marie from the Antarctic Centre come and run workshops for our tamariki. The programme is called "Kids in Space." Who knew the Antarctic Centre also taught lessons about space?? We had such a blast dressing up in space suits, making paper rockets, and learning about the lives of real astronauts. A trip to Mars might have been on our to-do lists, but after hearing that it takes several months of travelling to get there, we might be thinking twice about that!

A Day in the Life of India

Kia ora team!

This blog is brought to you from the not-so-sunny West Coast. I am borrowing ideas from Gabby, and decided to share ‘A Day in the Life Of’ post with you all today.

So, here is how I spent Wednesday 25th August.

I started my morning off with breakfast, before heading out for my daily walk.

Luckily I took my umbrella, because being the West Coast, it rained!

On my walk I went to visit to the local livestock. I was hoping today they might want to be my friends.

They did not.

(I’m only slightly offended)

Social Distance hang-outs with the sheep

I was able to get better photos of the lambs yesterday.

After that I sat down to do some school work, including leaving some comments on your blogs.

By the time I had finished that, it was close to lunchtime and I was a bit hungry, so I decided to bake some cookies (I love to bake).

First I had to feed the Queen (my cat Peppa)

I had seen on the home learning page there was a suggestion to make some space themed cookies, so I had a go at my own!

After they were cooked I swirled food colouring through white icing and dipped them in.

After I’d finished baking and tidying up, I did some more work and then cuddled my other cat Cocoa.

This is Cocoa!

I then sorted dinner for my family, watched TV with my family and then I read my book for a while before bed!

Let me know what your day looks like in your bubble!

To the Moon and Beyond!

We have had another busy week in Tāwhirimātea looking at The Earth and beyond as part of our Science inquiry. We have been exploring the history of spacecraft and how we are travelling to space in the present day.

Here is Lily's slideshow she created about her favourite spacecraft - the Space Shuttle, and the spacecraft her group made to take them to Mars.

Here are some other spacecraft the students have created:
